Handpicked, seasonal, local flowers to order and a bottle of Heron Farm Rose Wine from 2020, what’s not to love?
Heron Farm 2020 Rose
Heron Farm is delighted to present one of the better things to come out of 2020. An exceptionally late frost resulted in a crop that was small, but of excellent quality. The Seyval Blanc grapes used to make this wine were grown without pesticides in our glorious 17 acre in East Devon, and provided the juice for a delightful dry white wine with citrusy overtones. Perfect with seafood, a BBQ on a summer’s evening, or a picnic along the river Otter.
Why buy British flowers?
Many of us have already taken great steps to begin to understand where our edible produce comes from and are trying to shop local and organic to ensure that we are reducing our carbon footprint, and chemicals we bring into our homes.
Flowers on the hill believe that the next step is to focus on where and how flowers are produced and how they are treated before they end up in their homes. An estimated 90% of the flowers bought in this Country are imported, not just from Holland, some are flown in from as Columbia and Ethiopia. In order to preserve the flowers for these long journeys they are often sprayed with chemicals and then put onto aeroplanes to bring them to the UK.
Your average commercially grown British cut flower will have 10% of the carbon footprint of those of international commercial growers. Those grown by your local flower farmer like the Flowers on the hill will have an average of 5% in comparison.
The other major advantage to British flowers is that no two selections will ever be the same, they are all freshly picked from the flower patch. Different types of flowers will come and go throughout the season. Another fantastic outcome of organically and sustainably grown flowers is that they maintain their fragrance.
Flowers on the hill is a Devon based flower grower, positioned on the edge of the Blackdown hills. All the flowers grown are seasonal, sustainable, plastic and pesticide free. Every aspect is compostable, reusable or recyclable. We hope you enjoy your British flowers as much as we love growing and arranging them.
